This home was built in 1977 with the traditional L-shaped living-dining room, and a dark kitchen in the corner. The homeowner wanted to expand the size of the kitchen, without adding to the existing house and reducing the size of the back yard. By eliminating the interior walls separating the kitchen and the dining-living space, additional space was gained for the kitchen. The kitchen faces north, so in order to brighten up what had been a dark kitchen, the whole north wall was used for windows, and a new garden door was installed. Pot lights were installed for additional lighting. Lighting in the kitchen was rewired, and put on different switches, so lighting could be increased or decreased based on function.
Cabinets on the east wall was designed to reach the ceiling, and a tall pantry was included to replace the former built-in closet that was used as a pantry. An enormous, 7’x5’ island was designed with cabinetry both front / back sides, plus seating for 5. Quartz countertops were installed on all base cabinets. New energy star rated kitchen appliances were installed.
